Iron Man 2

PG-13 2010 | Action Adventure

If 2008's Iron Man rocked your socks off, get ready - because the sequel just might melt your fillings. Robert Downey Jr. returns as Tony Stark, a billionaire weapons mogul now committed to maintaining world peace as his own mechanically enhanced alter ego. But our hero is definitely up against it this time around: not only does the U.S. government want control of his super suit, but he'll also go toe to toe with Scarlett Johansson and (gulp) Mickey Rourke. This is rock'em sock'em popcorn fare at its finest.

Top 10 Fun Facts

  1. Originally Black Widow was supposed to be played by Emily Blunt, but she had to drop out because of scheduling conflicts with Gulliver's Travels. It's all good though - Scarlett Johansson stepped in, and nobody fills out a catsuit quite like ScarJo.
  2. It was actually Robert Downey Jr.'s suggestion that they use the Iron Man suitcase-suit from the comic books in the movie. Good thing he has a private plane, because that would be a pain to get through security.
  3. The Whiplash in the movie actually doesn't exist in the comic books - he is a combination of two different characters, Whiplash and Crimson Dynamo. The filmmakers stole the whip and the cool nickname from the comic book version of Whiplash, but it's Crimson Dynamo who was the basis for Whiplash's background, real name, and electricity-controlling armor. I wonder if putting all that together also gave him an identity crisis...
  4. One of the writers suggested that they use J. Robert Oppenheimer as an influence for Tony Stark in Iron Man 2. Oppenheimer developed the atom bomb but became severely depressed after he saw the destruction it caused and dubbed himself the "Destroyer of Worlds." This dramatic turn was not what the filmmakers were going for, and decided to have Stark save the world instead.
  5. Samuel L. Jackson is a tough negotiator: he originally wasn't going to return as Nick Fury, but after Jon Favreau promised him more screen time and Marvel gave him an unprecedented nine-picture deal to appear as Nick Fury, he graciously returned. Talk about a sweet deal.
  6. Actress Scarlett Johansson desperately wanted the role of Black Widow in Iron Man 2, so much so that Scarlett dyed her hair 'scarlett' red, long before she was awarded the part.
  7. Olivia Munn actually had to reshoot all of her scenes in Iron Man 2 - the role she was originally given was cut because it was too comedic for the movie, which ended up taking a darker turn. But Jon Favreau liked her so much that he wrote in another character from the comic books for her to play... that's quite a compliment.
  8. Justin Hammer was changed to a younger character when the filmmakers decided on Sam Rockwell to play him - Hammer was much older in the comics. It's a good thing too, because I'm not sure age makeup would work very well on Sam Rockwell.
  9. Shooting lasted 71 days. And for more than 71 days, drivers on Los Angeles' busy 101 Freeway wondered what all those huge containers were for at the Sepulveda Dam. They later learned that it was one of the "top secret" sets for Iron Man 2.
  10. Iron Man creator Stan Lee has left an indelible mark on the comic book industry. Fans around the world recognize his face from his multiple movie cameos. He often appears as himself, but not in Iron Man 2. In this film he plays another famous person known for making cameos, CNN talk show host Larry King.
